Santa Clarita's Best Nights Out Are Already Happening on Main Street, Not at the Mall

If you've seen the renderings for Valencia Town Center's next chapter, you might think the neighborhood's social center of gravity is about to shift toward the mall. Centennial, the Dallas-based developer that bought the property in 2023, announced in April that it's adding more than 175,000 square feet of new dining, entertainment and retail, with the big draw being a 125,000-square-foot Round1 Bowling & Arcade taking over the old Sears anchor. The mall's general manager, Michael de Leon, put it plainly: "We aren't just adding stores, we are curating experiences."

Here's the part that gets lost in the press release: Round1 isn't opening this year. It's not opening this fall. Construction news from March put the timeline at early 2027. Some of the ten announced additions are already welcoming guests, but the marquee piece of the redevelopment, the one meant to anchor the whole reinvention, is still a year and a half out.

Meanwhile, over on Main Street, Old Town Newhall has been running its own version of a curated experience every third Thursday since spring, with no rendering required and no anchor tenant to wait on.

The Mall's Transformation Is a Timeline. Main Street's Is a Habit.

Old Town Newhall's SENSES Block Party takes over Main Street from 7 to 10 p.m. on the third Thursday of the month, April through September, with a rotating theme, live music, food trucks and an on-street bar hosted by a different local restaurant each time. This year's lineup has moved from Honey I Shrunk SENSES on June 18 to Christmas in July on July 16 to Time Machine on August 20. The next one, Oktoberfest, lands September 17, which will close out the season.

That's a five-month run of monthly street takeovers that already happened, mostly, before Round1 pours its first concrete footing. The block party format works because Main Street was built for it. Old Town Newhall's own materials describe roughly 271 acres where boutiques, restaurants and historic buildings sit close enough together that a night out doesn't require moving the car between stops. A mall redevelopment has to be built. Main Street just has to be closed to traffic for three hours.

The Weekly Anchors Nobody Needs to Wait For

Beyond the monthly block party, Santa Clarita already runs a standing weekly calendar that doesn't depend on any construction schedule:

Concerts in the Park is in its 36th year and wraps its 2026 run on August 29, with this summer's lineup pulling tribute acts for Selena, Elton John, Paramore and Panic! At The Disco alongside Top 40 country and Motown sets. That's one Saturday left before the series goes quiet until next summer, which makes this the week to actually use it rather than read about it later.

Celebrate, over at Canyon Country Community Center, runs on the second Friday of the month through September and has spent this summer rotating through Indonesian, Argentine, Jamaican and Mexican cultural nights, complete with a Celebrate Passport program for residents who want to hit all four. It sits on the opposite side of the valley from Old Town Newhall, which matters if you've been treating Main Street as the only game in town. Canyon Country has its own recurring calendar running in parallel.

What's Actually Open on Main Street Right Now

The mall's list of ten new tenants includes concepts still finding their opening dates. Old Town Newhall's list of what's open tonight is longer and already proven. Within a few blocks of the Hart Park roundabout, residents can already choose from:

• Newhall Refinery, Santa Clarita's first gastropub, open since 2013
• Smokehouse on Main, for Southern-style barbecue
• Maginn's Pub, an Irish spot known locally for its fish and chips
• Egg Plantation, a breakfast and lunch fixture in the neighborhood
• Sidecar Market, a speakeasy-style bar tucked into 24275 Main Street
• Eighth & Rail, a neighborhood pub in a building with roots dating to the late 1800s
• Brewery Draconum, with an outdoor garden built for sitting outside
• The MAIN, the district's live venue for theater, comedy and music
• Laemmle Theater, a seven-screen art house a few blocks over on Lyons Avenue
• Canyon Theatre Guild, Santa Clarita's only community live theater

None of that required a developer's press release. It required people opening businesses on a street that was already built to support foot traffic, then staying open long enough to become the answer to "where should we eat before the show."

Why This Matters If You Already Live Here

The instinct is to assume that whatever gets the biggest press release is where the neighborhood is heading. Centennial's announcement is genuinely significant. Adding 175,000 square feet of new tenants to Valencia Town Center is a real investment in that part of the valley, and when Round1 opens in 2027 it will be a legitimate draw, especially for families who want bowling, arcade games and a Japanese food hall under one roof.

But if you're deciding what to do this Thursday, or this September, the mall's promise doesn't help you yet. The neighborhood that already delivers a reason to leave the house every week, sometimes every few days, is the one built around Main Street, Canyon Country Community Center, and a park that's hosted the same concert series for 36 years running. Old Town Newhall isn't waiting for anyone to finish building anything. It already runs.

That's worth knowing whether you've lived in Santa Clarita for twenty years or you're still learning which side of the valley hosts which event on which Friday. The mall will catch up eventually. Main Street already has the habit.
